Short answer: A critical security flaw in LXD and MicroCloud allows attackers to impersonate trusted clients without needing a private key. Update to the latest versions to fix it.
TL;DR
- LXD and MicroCloud versions affected
- Attackers can impersonate trusted clients
- Update to fixed versions
- Limit network access to HTTPS API
What is CVE-2026-112816?
This issue is a security vulnerability in LXD and MicroCloud, software used for managing virtual machines. Attackers can impersonate trusted clients by forging certificates. This lets them gain full access to the cluster and virtual machines. To fix, update to the latest versions or restrict network access to the LXD API.

How it works

An attacker can impersonate a trusted client on Canonical's LXD and MicroCloud by adding a trusted public certificate to their own certificate chain. The server accepts the attacker as the trusted client, giving them full access to the cluster and virtual machines.
- Attacker reaches the attackers over the internet / network
- No login or account is needed
- Sends crafted input that triggers the flaw
- Impact: data can be read, data or code can be changed, service crashes or stops
